| In many cases, cosmetic dentistry is more effective in treating not the teeth directly, but rather the underlying physiological structure. This is the principle behind the procedure known as gum lift. This cosmetic dentistry technique is also called "crown lengthening," although that name actually refers to the results and not the procedure. Originally, gum lift was a surgical procedure used in order to treat diseased and infected gums; it has only been since 2002 that gum lift has been part of cosmetic dentistry. When the dentist performs a gum lift procedure, s/he raises and literally sculpts the gum line in such a way that makes the teeth appear longer and more symmetrical. By reconstruction of the underlying tissues and bones, teeth can be made to look more even and attractive. Those who suffer from an excessively "gummy" smile with short, peg-like teeth are ideal candidates for gum lift. In addition to its cosmetic dentistry application, gum lift is used for patients who are suffering from periodontal (gum) disease or who have a tooth (or teeth) broken or decayed below the gum line. In this case, gum list will enable the dentist to better treat the damaged tooth and restore the patient's own natural, healthy smile. Today, dentists usually employ laser techniques in order to perform gum lift. A gum life procedure may also be performed in conjunction with other restorative techniques, such as the use of porcelain veneers. The opposite of gum lift, incidentally, is called gum regeneration. This may be called for in case where the gum line has receded, exposing the roots of the teeth and causing them to appear too long. Once the underlying cause is identified, the dentist uses a grafting technique in order to restore the gum line to a more natural-looking length and prevent further deterioration. |
