Law enforcement and other agencies have become increasing dependent on forensic science to help solve difficult investigative cases. In many of these cases, especially those that involve some sort of assault, where there is an attacker and a victim, the attacker may have left a bite mark on the victim’s body. This is especially true in cases that involve sexual abuse as an attacker often displays behavior that is both animalistic and dominating to the victim. This bite mark evidence gives law enforcement officials an excellent clue to act on in finding the assailant in these cases of abuse. When bite marks are present on a victim like this, a forensic odontologist would carefully examine the bite mark and compare it to existing dental records for positive recognition. Forensic odontology, also known as forensic dentistry, is the science that relates to human identification through the study and evaluation of bite marks. These bite marks can be left on human skin, on food and on virtually any surface that can receive a dental impression. There are other extensions in which forensic odontology may prove useful as well. Forensic odontology can be used in identifying human remains that have been exposed to severe trauma, like those that died in some sort of accident. Human teeth are considered to be very resilient to different types of trauma and will usually remain intact in most situations. Scientists and investigators have utilized forensic odontology in identifying people that have been severely disfigured in car, plane, boat and other types of accidents. A forensic odontologist would study the victims and their available dental records to make identification even though the rest of the body may be completely unrecognizable. Forensic odontologists have been called upon to assist in the identification of humans that have been involved in mass fatalities as well, where identification would otherwise be impossible. The same approach would be taken as with the cases of accidents where oral remains are compared to existing dental records. The best type of dental records that a forensic odontologist would make use of would be x-rays as they can give a clear depiction of the mouth at the time of the image. Forensic odontology can also be used in identifying the age of someone as well without dental records. Archeologists have been known to make use of this science in identifying people and their ages from many years ago, by analyzing the size and structure of the mouth.
